How to Draw on a Tablet

Drawing on a tablet is a challenge for most beginners. There are different forums online where artists ask for tips and ideas on how they can get better at drawing on a tablet. For some beginner artists, this is a challenge especially if their tablet isn’t a stylus tablet.

That, however, isn’t the only reason. Certain factors make it hard for one to draw on a tablet as the experience isn’t the same as drawing on a paper using a pen, pencil or chalk and hence take time to master. That said, when it comes to drawing tablets, it’s really up to an individual as drawing is subjective.

Even with our tips, it’s important to remember that drawing on a tablet is a different experience for everyone as there are different variants such as different makes and models, sizes and pencil shapes.

Get Comfortable

This may sound too obvious, but very few artists ensure that they are comfortable when they are drawing. Whether it’s your first time drawing on a tablet or you have some experience, it’s important that you are comfortable when drawing.

When drawing, ensure that your sitting position is comfortable. Only your hand should do the moving and not your tablet. This you can achieve by buying an ergonomic chair or designing a comfortable workplace for yourself that lets you rest your back comfortably. Every single thing counts when it comes to sketching or drawing using a tablet.

Positioning the Tablet

The position of the tablet is essential when drawing. This also depends on the size of your drawing tablet. While some artists will place the tablet on their laps, others will slant it on their legs, have it near or far from them. The position of your tablet determines the kind of images you will produce.

When sketching or drawing, your tablet should move as little as possible. In addition, also observe the angle in line to that of your screen. This helps give you a spot on visual coordination.

Settings

You need to make the settings of your drawing tablet your best friend. For you to be able to produce the sketches or images you need, knowing what settings are on your tablet and how to adjust them to give you what you want is essential.

For instance, some tablets have a pressure-sensitive mechanism. That means that if you press them hard on the screen, they can make your lines thicker or lighter. Also, what assigned keys or drivers does your tablet have. Knowing all this will be beneficial to you when drawing on a tablet.

Eyes on the Screen

When watching a football match or binge-watching your favorite series, your eyes are always on the screen. This needs to be the same thing that you do when drawing on your tablet. Your eyes need to be on the screen. Look at where you put your first stroke to where you will put your last stroke. Remember, this is no different when you are drawing on a piece of paper as your focus is usually on the paper.
